From today we are going into semi-retirement and will no longer be baking bread apart from a few call-in customers. The stresses and strains are not something we want to be involved in. We intend to spend more time in the UK with my Grandchildren, and working on my various computer and teaching related projects.

Yesterday one of my students brought me some scones which they had purchased from a high end branded store in KL. Unfortunately they tasted awful and did not have the taste or texture of an English Scone. Apparently people queue up to buy them which goes to show that people will buy anything that has a brand. I then made some scones to show the student what a scone should look and taste like. She agreed that mine (actually she made them) tasted better.

Now scones are something I do know a lot about. When my children were young, most weekends I would drive them out into the English countryside to sample the fresh air and always before returning we would find one of the many tea shops scattered around and sample their scones.

Scones are almost always eaten in the following manner. The scone is cut (or twisted in half), warmed or toasted and served with dishes of thick clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Scones are very quick and cheap to make, you could probably make a dozen for the price of one bought outside.

When I returned from London, I found to my dismay that my Mill for grinding grains was broken. We started to use pre-ground whole-grain flour. We noticed however that this flour is quite hard, so for instance cookies and cakes were not as we would like them. I have therefore taken out of storage my hand mill in order we can resume grinding the wheat albeit by hand. This mill is very dear to me. It was the last thing my Mother bought for me. My Mother gave me life and it is fitting that the Mill is a symbol of life. Mills have been helping to feed people for thousands of years. When you mill your own grains at the point of milling the grains are alive, so the flour is full of live enzymes. These will die of over the next six hours. So maybe think about getting a Mill rather than a new HD TV.

We have quite a few visitors this week, including two from Japan. It is nice to meet people with similar interests as our own and allows us to get an idea of what other people are getting up to.

I do not know how many there are, but I can hear the cries of kittens that were born today or yesterday. There is always something going on around here.

Well I am happy to report that my garden is thriving, I have Basil growing all over the place, which is good as I use a lot of it. Our Passion Fruit plant is thriving and is now a couple of feet high. Across the way is a grape vine, gradually working its way across the fencing.

I have taken the Burger Buns off the menu. they were really very high in oil and I did not consider them too healthy. If you want something for a sandwich, try the fat-free Ciabatta.

We do get enquiries from people outside our local area. We have two ways to meet their needs. In Malacca, Seremban, Kuala Lumpur and Penang we can deliver to your nearest Justlife outlet (see list under locations). If this is not convienient, then we can supply by Post Laju after receiving payment to CIMB bank or Paypal. This is totally new for us so if you want to take advantage of these methods of payment and delivery please contact us directly to discuss how we can help you.

Of course you may just wish to send a gift of things Organic to your nearest and dearest who are out of State, then this is the way to go.

April 1st 2009

No, this is not meant as an April fools prank. Due to a number of enquiries from customers to buy bread directly from us. We shall start offering bread for sale from our bakery on Mondays and Fridays between 08:00 and 10AM only. I know its not a lot of time, but considering we are off the beaten track we do not get many call in buyers so we must impose some limitation. If you want to order, then by all means give us a call. We can also make cakes, Vegan, non-Vegan and Gluten Free.

In addition we have some items for sale such as Kasturi and Basil Syrup, a refreshing drink. Pure Coconut Oil Soap made from our very own coconut oil that we make on the premises. Of course you can also buy Coconut Oil too, but bring your own bottle.

We are happy to inform our customers that we have started using a range of organic products from Italy. As I understand it, the farms which produce these items are based in Tuscany between the provinces of Firenze and Sienna. These farms are collectively represented by Alce Nero.

For our breads we are using Spelt Flour, which is grown in the regions. It is a softer whole grain flour, that many people with gluten intolerance can take, particularly if the bread is leavened with levain. Two types of honey are also used, both Organic. They are not heated above 30 C during their processing and retain all their nutrition. Honey and Spelt, a perfect combination!

In our pantry we use Alce Nero pasta to prepare our pasta dishes, served with organic vegetables and sauces.

Totally off subject. My wife Mardia is a translator Malay/English English/Malay. She has worked on several well known projects and include the translation of books by Karim Raslan and she participated in the translation of Memoirs of a Geisha and translated several movies for Astro Television. So if you need some translation work done, please give her a call. I am sure her rates are reasonable. She is currently working in Singapore as a translator so your support, might bring her back to Malaysia.

24th Feburary

Ok we have started baking again for Justlife. The first day in the shops will be Friday 27th Feburary at Justlife Ikano. I believe the branches will take delivery starting on Monday or Tuesday. The Breads are all new and most of them are entirely from levain, no processed yeast! The Justlife staff love the Burger Buns, get them before they do.

We shall be making some Coconut Oil but it will be sold from our premises where it is kept in a Stainless Steel Drum. Customers must bring a bottle or other container to put the oil in. Sold by weight, you can buy the quantitiy you want.

Peanut Butter will be sold exclusively at Justlife

This week has been busy as we are doing some renovation including building a store room and tiling the floor. This weekend we are have a small party for a young boy and his family. The menu is as follows:

1st Feb 2009

Well here we are back again from a nearly two month trip to the UK and Singapore. Here are some pictures. Notice my Grandson with the loaf from the famous French Poilane Bakery. You will see some pictures of the countryside as we drove across from Bournemouth to Lyme Regis, a small south-coast town. This is a wonderful bakery located next to an old Mill. I hope that you can see that the baking and customer area are one and the same. The customers eat great chunks of bread served with hot soups, scones direct for the oven, served with cream and strawberry jam. My daughter commented that they were the best scones she had ever eaten. For those of you that have been to my place, you will notice the similarity of the bakeries.

Unfortunately I "fell" to the flu that was going around and did not make it to all the places I wanted to.

I was very fortunate to meet up with, perhaps Britains No.1 Artisan Baker, Dan Lepard. We had lunch at London's best Pizza Cafe, Franco Manca, located in Brixton Market. It was absolutely fabulous and the prices were very reasonable. Nearby is an Organic Cafe and shop called WildCaper owned by the same people as Franco Manca. They sell bread which is baked in the Pizza Ovens.

For those of you who do not know of Brixton, its located in South London and is a melting pot of different races and cultures. Because of this there is huge market where you can obtain just about any kind of food from around the world.
